"Essex" - American whaling ship from Nantucket, Massachusetts, launched in 1799. In 1820 November 20 at sea in the South Pacific, under the command of Captain George Pollard, Jr., the ship was attacked by a sperm whale and sunk. About 2,000 nautical miles (3,700 km) off the coast of South America the 20-member crew were forced to abandon ship in three whaling boats with the food and water, they managed to salvage from the sinking ship. After a month of sailing, they landed on the uninhabited Henderson Island. Three crew members decided to stay on the island, from which they were rescued in 1821 in April, and the remaining seventeen set sail again for the coast of South America. The men suffered severe dehydration, starvation and the vagaries of the open ocean, and the survivors eventually resorted to cannibalism. By the time they were rescued in 1821 in February, three months after the sinking of the "Essex", only five of the seventeen were alive. First Mate Owen Chase and cabin boy Thomas Nickerson later wrote accounts of the ordeal. The tragedy gained international attention and inspired Herman Melville to write his famous novel "Moby Dick" in 1851.

The edition can be used to make a model of the whaling ship "Essex" from 1799. A well-designed and richly detailed model of medium complexity for intermediate and advanced modellers. Where necessary, the details are printed with double-sided printing, and the sails and flags are also printed on thin paper. The graphic instructions are abundant, perfectly readable and informative.
