„Henry Grace a Dieu“ – the English combat carrack

Henry VIII's favorite ship, the famous "Henry Grace à Dieu", was launched in 1514. The sailors did not like this distinctive French name and nicknamed the ship "Great Harry". The royal flagship, with a displacement of about 1,000 tons, had the traditional carrack architecture with tall superstructures, but for the first time had two battery decks; each mounted eight cannons per side. In addition, many cannons were mounted on the jute and stern superstructure. True, most of them were of small caliber, suitable only for close combat. The length of the ship's keel reached about 45 m, the width - more than 20 m. The ship was built more for prestige, than it had any military value. "Great Harry" took part in the Battle of Portsmouth in 1545. in 1553 it burned down in an accidental fire.
