USS "Greeneville" (SSN-772) - US "Los Angeles"-class "Improved Los Angeles/688i" class multi-purpose submarine with a nuclear engine. The submarine belonged to the group of ships 688, which, in addition to 12 vertically mounted maneuvering missile launch shafts, had installed more reliable propulsion systems and were more "clean" hydro dynamically, compared to previous ships of this type. As a result, the tactical speed of the ships increased from 6 to 8 -12 knots. As a 688i modification ship, the "Greeneville" can launch Mr.48 type torpedoes, cruise missiles, as well as mine barrages, using its four forward torpedo tubes, and can also launch "Tomahawk" SLCM missiles from VLS type launchers. 110 m long and 6,927 tons of underwater water capacity submarine, thanks to a nuclear engine with a power of 30,000 h. p. (water pressure reactor S6G), could develop a speed of 33 knots underwater. On February 9, 2001, 9 nautical miles from Ohau, Hawaii, the USS "Greeneville" collided with the Japanese fishing training vessel "Ehime Maru". The incident occurred, when for the 16 civilians on deck of the submarine, were being demonstrated an emergency dismemberment maneuver. It was during this time, that a Japanese fishing boat was hit. Due to the damage, the "Ehime Maru" sank within minutes, killing 9 Japanese crew members, 4 of whom were students. The incident had several political back-and-forths between Japan and the US, heightened by the fact, that the submarine was manned by civilians during the "Emergency Ballast Discharge". After the judicial investigation, it was determined, that the collision was caused by several individual mistakes and blunders on the American ship crew, which also contributed to the failure of the sonar imaging system, but not so fatal, that the voyage could have been aborted. It was also established, that the sonar system was serviced at the time of the collision by an operator who, due to his short service time, did not yet have the right to work alone with the acoustic situation management system. After the incident, a special commission of inquiry made recommendations, as a result of which the representatives of the fleet management on shore and six members of the ship's crew received disciplinary sanctions. The ship's commander was found to have violated the Unified Military Service Code, as a result of which he was removed from command duties with entries in the service records.

A large, well-detailed but... simple model of a modern submarine, that even an advanced beginner, working under the supervision of a more experienced colleague, can put together perfectly. The model can be made in one of two versions: during the launch in 1994 and from the service period. In the first case, the front of the ship is painted with a special commemorative sign, there is no tactical number on the control cabin. In the second case, the hull is completely painted in combat camouflage paints, the tactical numbers 772 are painted on the sides of the control cabin. It is possible to install missile launch shafts with "Tomahawk" missiles inside, opening shaft covers, a removable part of the ship's front, fairing that hides a modeled sonar antenna. The model includes details for the production of the ASDS (Advanced SEAL Delivery System) model of a miniature submarine. This model can also be made as a separate model. However, for modelers with less experience, we recommend to abandon all these "things".
