More than 20 ships were wrecked in the Tacking Point area of New South Wales by the mid-19th century. In 1879 a lighthouse, designed by architect James Barnett, was built about 8 kilometers south of Port Macquarie on Cape. It was the fourth of five small navigational beacons, built under this project. In 1919 acetylene started to be used as the source of lighthouse fire instead of oil. It was electrified in 1974. The lighthouse is a popular spot for whale watching. The height of the lighthouse is 8 m (26 ft).
