Nakajima Ki I „Hei“ – the Japanese fighter

The prototype made its first flight in January 1939. Three prototypes were built, equipped with 14-cylinder double star air-cooled Nakajima Ha-25 engines, developing 925 h. p. power. This engine was an analogue of the “Sakae” engine, installed on A6M “Zero” fighters. The armament of the prototypes consisted of two 7.7 mm caliber Typ 89 machine guns, mounted in the front of the fuselage above the engine. The first production model is named "Army Fighter Type 1 Model 1A" and received the nickname "Hayabusa". Since all the work on the construction of the new fighter was carried out in super-secret, the first meetings of the pilots of the P-40E "Warhawk" and the Brewster B-239 "Buffalo" with the "Hei" were a rather unpleasant surprise for the Allies. The performance of the Japanese fighter was much better, than that of all the fighters, used in the early Anglo-American war in the Pacific.
