Rumpler C.I - the German multi-purpose aircraft

Rumpler C.I (factory name 5A 2) is a two-seater single-engine reconnaissance biplane. Commissioned by the German Air Force (Luftstreitkrafte) in 1915. It was one of the first German Type C aircraft and one of the longest-running members of its class during the First World War. Front units stopped using it only in 1918 at the beginning. In 1915 constructed by engineer E. Rumpler. During the First World War, “Rumpler Flugzeug Werke” was mass-produced, as well as “Germania Flugzeug Werke”, “Markiche Flugzeug Werke”, “Beyerische Rumpler Werke”, and “Albert Rinne Flugzeug Werke” (modified Rumpler C.Ia produce “Hannoversche Waggonfabrik "). Early-stage C.I models were armed with only one “Parabellum” machine gun, mounted on a Schneider turret. Subsequent aircraft were additionally fitted with a synchronized “Spandau” machine gun at the front left. C.I could also be used as a light bomber and carry 100 kg (10 pcs x 10 kg) of bombs. The variants of the model were: C.Ia, with 180 h. p. power “Argus As” III engine (instead of Mercedes D.III), C.II, (for which there is no evidence, that it was actually produced), 6B 1 - single fighter Rumpler C.I training version, powered by 150 h. p. power Benz Bz. II engine without a machine gun turret. The Rumpler C.I was used by the German and Austro-Hungarian Air Forces and flew on all World War I fronts in Europe, Macedonia, Thessaloniki and Palestine. The Rumpler C. I was a relatively difficult aircraft to pilot. It was viewed negatively by German and Austro-Hungarian pilots. At the end of the war, this type of aircraft was purchased by Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Finland. Lithuanian military aviation operated two Rumpler C.I fighters (factory numbers 2699, 8144). Also had no. 4936, which was used for spare parts. The aircraft were purchased in 1919. At the end of June, the German 425th Squadron (Flieger Abteillung No. 425) was stationed at Kaunas Airport and was retreating. No. 8144 was purchased for 6,000 gold in 1919 June 10, No. 2699 - June 28. Due to the complicated operation, Lithuanian pilots did not like this plane very much.
