In 1938 Curtiss received an order to rework the P-36A fighter. The new fighter received the designation XP - 40 and was an all-metal single-seat low-wing monoplane with an Allison V-1710-19 linear engine. Serial production started in March 1940. Starting with version D, a more powerful Allison V-1710-39 engine was installed, which led to a change in the design of the front end. The fuselage machine guns were eliminated and all armament was placed in the wing. During the 5 years of the war, 13,737 units were produced, which, depending on the version, were called "Warhawk", "Kittyhawk" and "Tomohawk". Although it was slower, than the Me - 109 and the "Spitfire", it surpassed them by almost twice the flight range and was more resistant to damage. As a result, it has been used very often in bombing and strike operations. These fighters fought on all fronts of World War II.
A complex, well-designed and highly detailed model of the "Warhawk", piloted by Edward Rector of the US Volunteer "Flying Tigers" in the Chinese Chiang Kai-shek Army to achieve 7 aerial victories. Recommended for intermediate to advanced modelers only.
