P-51 "Mustang" - US fighter, used since 1943 winter until about 1960, and in some countries until the 1980s. It is one of the most successful and famous fighters of the Second World War. It was he who ensured the complete possession of European airspace in 1944. A total of 15,875 aircraft were produced. The US was bombing Germany and needed a fighter to protect the B-17, B-29 bombers and control the airspace, while the operation was underway. The P-40, used up to that time, was already technically behind, and the P-38 was simply not enough. The technical characteristics of the P-47 were satisfactory, but its flight range was too short. It was necessary to create and produce a new fighter, that could fly from London to Berlin, fight there with German fighters, that had just taken off, and return. Therefore, mass production of the P-51, based on the ultra-fast experimental prototype NA-73X of 1940, began. The characteristics of the aircraft were simply impressive: an impressive speed of 703 km/h at the time, flying at an optimal altitude of 7.62 km (this is almost the limit of the capabilities of propeller-driven aircraft), a maximum flight range of 2755 km with external tanks, 6 or 4 M2 0.50 caliber (12, 7 mm) machine guns, up to 10 rockets, bombs, 1695 horsepower engine, maximum weight 4 tons. The Luftwaffe pilots simply had no choice, but to try to attack the bombers suddenly and unexpectedly and withdraw after one attack. At first this worked, but later the Americans changed their tactics a bit, allowing the P-51Ds to leave their bombers and chase spotted enemies, for example, to the landing strip, and fire on them there. During 1944 The German air force was practically destroyed. The speed of the newly introduced Me-262 jet was expected to bring success in 1944, but the P-51 could easily match the early jet fighters in speed and greatly exceed them in maneuverability and range.
A moderately complex well designed and detailed model, recreating the US AF fighter, used in Western Europe in 1944-45, designed for advanced and intermediate modelers. If You make a model without a cabin interior, with an opaque cabin hood and an included chassis, then it will be perfectly done even by a modeler with little experience, working under the supervision of a more experienced colleague.
