The high-speed fighter I-3 was developed under the leadership of N. N. Polikarpov since 1926. After considering many I-3 options, the German BMW-VI engine was chosen. The I-3 was a biplane of primarily wooden construction with one pair of pylons. The aircraft featured very clean aerodynamic shapes. Due to the rather heavy engine, the weight of the I-3 was significantly higher, than that of other Soviet fighters of the time. The first experimental I-3 was tested in the spring of 1928 and reached the highest speed in the USSR - 290 km/h. In the summer of 1928, the second copy of the I-3 was produced, with which state tests were carried out at the Air Force Research Institute. After the tests, military experts recommended, that the I-3 be accepted into the arsenal and that the fighters begin to be delivered to combat units. In total, from 1928 to 1931 389 I-3 fighters were produced.
