Nieuport Nie-16c.1 - the French fighter

In 1915 the constructor of the “Nieuport” company, Gustaw Delage, designed the excellent “Nieuport” Nie-11 airplane. It was distinguished by its appearance: it had a large upper chord and small lower wings. The wings were connected by V-shaped spares. Airplanes of this design were called 1 ½-planes. In 1916, 110 h. p. power engine “Le Rhone” was mounted on the plane. This version began to be designated “Nieuport” Nie-16c.1. But installing a heavier engine worsened the plane's flight characteristics: it became too heavy in nose part. The design of the plane was quickly changed by increasing the dimensions and, at the same time, the area of the wings. This version was designated the “Nieuport” Nie-17c.1 and became the most widely used and best known version of this fighter type.
