The “Salmson” 2 was a French World War I and interwar reconnaissance aircraft and light bomber. The machine was constructed in a biplane scheme, wooden construction and had a classic stationary chassis. The prototype first took off in 1916, and series production continued from 1917 to 1918. About 3,200 aircraft of this type were produced. The aircraft is equipped with one 230 h. p. power Salmson 9Za engine. The armament consisted of three 7.7 mm machine guns. The “Salmson” 2 was developed by Emil Salmson in response to French military aviation requirements for a new light bomber, published in 1916. The aircraft was very good and, along with the “Breguet” XIV, was the main French military aviation reconnaissance and light bomber from 1916 to 1918! “Salmson” 1 (SM-1) design and operation experience is taken as a prototype of new plane. Two major versions were developed during production: the SM-2A2 (reconnaissance version) and the SM-2B2 (bombardment version). This type of aircraft, in addition to France, has served in aviation in Belgium, Japan, the United States and Poland. They were removed from the Polish Military Aviation only in 1923.
