SZD-16 "Gil" - a prototype of a Polish single-seater mixed construction high-wing training glider. The glider was developed by Szybowcowe Zakłady Doświadczalnych (SZD), located in Bielsko-Biała. The first flight of the prototype took place in October 1958. The device is not serially produced. The total weight was only 181 kilograms. Work on the SZD-16 "Gil" began in 1955, when the League of Friends of the Soldier ordered the development of a new intermediate training glider to succeed the IS-B "Komar", which had been in production since the interwar period. In the new glider, it was decided to focus on ease of control, good piloting characteristics and low production costs. Although the project promised a highly successful glider, it did not meet the customer's ferry conditions, and the SZD factory focused on the design and production of the SZD-15 "Sroka" glider. The SZD-16 did not fly until 1958, and although its flight characteristics were very good, work on this glider was discontinued in 1960.
A simple, yet highly detailed model of a glider with full cockpit, landing gear detailing, that is completely uncomplicated. Therefore, this model is perfect for beginners and modelers with little experience, working under the supervision of a more experienced colleague.
