In the late 1980s, the International Aviation Sports Federation (FAI) decided to return to the idea of a pre-war World class Olympic glider. It was supposed to be a monotypical glider, with which the pilots would have equal opportunities in the competition, and the winner would be determined only by the pilot's abilities. In 1989, the FAI launched a tender to create the conditions for a monotypical "world-class glider". They were to help develop aviation sports. The winner of the competition, which took place from September to October 1992 at the Oerlinghausen Gliding Base in Germany, was the PW-5 “Smyk” glider, designed by group constructors „MEiL“ oft the Warsaw Polytechnic Institute, led by Dr.engineer Roman Szwitkewicz. Serial production of “Smyk” started in 1994 at the “PZL-Šwidnik” plant in Szwidnik, producing 250 machines. In 2001, the production of PW-5 was transferred to the plant of “PZL Bielsko 1”, where an upgraded version of the glider B1-PW-5 was produced, and in 2005 the production was taken over by the Gliding Workshop "Ježow" in Sudetenland Ježow.
Two small and uncomplicated world-class glider models, which will be perfectly assembled even by an inexperienced modeler, supervised by a more experienced colleague. The models depict a glider PW-5 manufactured in Szwidnik, another - modernized version B1-PW-5, manufactured at the “Bielsko 1” plant. The models are so straightforward, that even a novice modeler with experience building more sophisticated models will fit in perfectly without the cab equipment and intake chassis.
