Red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a moth of the Nymphalidae family, 55-60 mm in size, black-brown, front wings with a red transverse band and white spots on the apex. Hindwings banded with red outer margin. Moths arrive in Lithuania from North Africa at the beginning of June. In the second half of August and in September, northern butterflies move south through Lithuania. Then they visit nurseries, drink fermented tree sap. More common near homesteads where nettles abound. Caterpillars appear in VI-VII months. They live among the twisted nettle leaves. The pupa is brown with shiny spots and a blunt head.
