The sponge (Aglais io) is a moth of the Nymphalidae family. Spread wings 50-60 mm in size. Each wing has a large eye spot. The upper side of the wing is cherry-colored, the lower side is black-brown. Flies in July - September, hibernates in March - May near homesteads, woods, meadows. The caterpillars are black with white dots, yellow legs and forked spines. Lives on nettles. The sponge is common in Europe and Asia, moths are abundant everywhere in Lithuania.
