The first test samples of the GAZ-66 were developed in 1962 and were a further result of the improvement of the 1.2-ton GAZ-62 truck produced between 1958 and 1962. Production of the GAZ-66 began in July 1964. Since 1968, these cars have been equipped with a centralized tire pressure control system. The last GAZ-66 rolled off the conveyor on July 1, 1999, with 965,941 vehicles produced.
