As in the case of the previous generation of road trucks MAZ, the promising fourth generation, which began production in the late 1980s, had two main models of truck tractors: with a 6X4 wheel arrangement and a gross vehicle weight of up to 44 tons (MAZ-6430) and with a 4x2 wheel formula and with a total weight of up to 32 tons (MAZ-5440). The first prototype of the second model was produced in 1993 and had the index MAZ-54462. in 1994 it passed extensive tests. In 1996, after successfully passing the acceptance and operational tests at the car farms of the Republic of Belarus, a new range of MAZ-5440 models was recommended for mass production. in 1997 March 11 the first main tractors of the new MAZ-54421 family were produced. At the end of 1997, MAZ-54402 and MAZ-544021 were added to them, fully meeting all European requirements for long-distance cargo transportation. in 2008 production of the updated model MAZ-5440A9 with a modernized cabin began. First of all, the front panel and radiator grille, bumper with new block headlights were changed. Serial production began in 2009. Cars MAZ-5440 were named "Prostor" ("Space"). For the 70th anniversary of the Minsk Automobile Plant (2014), the updated Euro-6 environmental class model MAZ-5440M9 was presented. A new cabin was installed, developed at the Minsk Automobile Plant, taking into account European standards. The engine and chassis elements are taken from the Mercedes-Benz Actros. The car is designed to supplement the range of MAZ-5440/6430 truck tractors.
A simple, large, well-designed and moderately detailed model for beginners and novice modellers. Details are plentiful as a beginner, but working under the supervision of a more experienced colleague makes the model manageable for all modellers.
