The Old Town Hall in Wroclaw is recognized as one of the most beautiful buildings of the Gothic-Renaissance city. Standing in the center of the city, the Town Hall was built in several stages over 250 years (from the end of the 13th century to the 16th century). It was home to the city government, the court. In 1580, a clock began to operate in the Town Hall Tower. From 1808, the interior of the Town Hall was gradually abandoned and destroyed. As the old building no longer met the needs of the city government, it gradually moved to the New Town Hall building, which stood nearby. The abandoned building continued to decay, but the first conservation work began in the late 19th century and lasted until World War II. In the last days of the war, the Town Hall was badly damaged, but was rebuilt and completely restored after the war. It now houses the board of the Wrocław City History Museum and all the premises are open to the public.
