The original Parliament building at the Brandenburg Gate was built according to the drawings of the Frankfurt architect Paul Wallot. The rectangular building, with many Renaissance-style details, consisted of a central plenary hall, two courtyards, reception rooms, a library and parliamentarians' offices. The conference hall was covered by an impressive glass dome, that lets in a lot of light and rises above the recreation building. In 1933 the plenary meeting hall was destroyed by fire. The glass dome was restored, but the building has since been used only for exhibitions. During the Second World War, the Wallot building was completely destroyed. During the reconstruction of the 60s, the former glass dome was not restored. In 1991 it was decided to turn the historic building into the seat of the reunified German parliament. British architect Norman Foster received the contract for the reconstruction. His drawings sought to emphasize the significance of the Parliament and the building's history, but also sought to align with a futuristic energy concept. Interior furnishings meet the highest standards of modern communication technologies and work technologies; at the same time, the original structure of the Paul Wallot building was replicated. Thanks to the high quality insulation and the use of solar energy, the energy demand is very low. A fully installed thermal power plant powered by environmentally friendly vegetable oil significantly reduces the level of environmentally harmful emissions. The building regained its glass dome, but not in its original form, but in the architectural style of the late 20th century.
