The sanctuary of Christ the Savior - a church (Russia)

The sanctuary of Christ the Savior was built in gratitude to Christ the Savior for help during a critical time in Russian history as a monument to the Russian people's heroism in the battle against the Napoleonic invaders in 1812. April 10, 1832 Emperor Nicholaj I approved the project of the Sanctuary, drawn by the architect K. Ton. The emperor personally chose a place for the sanctuary on the banks of the Moscow River, near the Kremlin. The church was built almost 44 years. In 1860, the sanctuary was first opened to Muscovites in all its glory.
