The history of the new Polish trainer-combat aircraft began in 1976. At the Aviation Institute work has begun on the initial aircraft, that will replace the TS-11 "Iskra" project. It was decided, that the aircraft would be powered by two thrust engines of 1800 daN each and would develop a speed of Mach 0.95. In the conceptual works it was decided, that Polish-made engines will be used, in order to get rid of dependence on foreign supplies. The new plane began to be designated I-22 "Iryda". The initial project was completed in 1978 and submitted to a special commission for evaluation. In 1980, after the technical and tactical requirements of the plane were finally approved, two years later, production of prototypes for static and flight tests began at the Mielec Aviation Factory. The "Iryda" prototype took off for the first time on March 5, 1985. Until 1991, 6 units were produced and all trials and tests were carried out with them. Test pilots highly rated the plane's flight characteristics and the spacious and wide-view cockpit. In October 1992 the first serial "Iryda" were handed over to the training units. This new, fully domestically produced plane allowed to perform all pilot training functions: pilotage, navigation, battlefield reconnaissance, destruction of land and water targets, air combat.

A simple, moderately detailed model, designed for the beginner modeler, but with a bit more work, this publication will surely make a great model of "Iryda" for an experienced modeler. Minimalist cabin equipment, minimal detailing of the chassis and its niches, good exterior detailing, decent spotted camouflage, hanging armament not detailed - none. Beginners and modelers with little experience are recommended to work under the supervision of a more experienced colleague. Antiquarian publication.
