Building of “Sevastopol” began in March 1892 at St. Petersburg's oldest shipyard, “Galernyj ostrov”. The construction was led by ship engineers J. Andrushchenko and N. Afanasyev. Keel was laid on March 22, 1892, launched on May 25, 1895, and began service on June 15, 1900. On October 17, 1900, he began a voyage from the Baltic sea to the Far East. The ship arrived in Port Arthur on 13 April 1901 and repair work on the machinery began immediately. Until the beginning of the war with Japan, the ship carried out daily work: training, visits, combat exercises, voyages, transport of armies and weapons, patrols ... On February 10, 1905, when Japan attacked Port-Arthur, the ship was slightly damaged, during the Japanese battles, supported Port - Arthur 's defenders during the siege. When the city’s defense became critical, it was decided to break into Russia’s main territory. On December 17, three Japanese torpedoes hit the “Sevastopol”, and the ship was sunk in the shallows. Thus he became an armored battery and, until the last moment, until Port-Arthur surrendered, fired at the attacking Japanese ships and army. 31 officers and 507 sailors surrendered.
