In 1884, the Spaniards signed a contract for the building of an innovative armored ship at the French shipyard “Forges et Chantiers de la Mediterranee” in La-Seyne-sur-Mer. Kiel was laid in April 1885, launched on February 5, 1887, and transferred to the Spanish Navy on September 9, 1888. He took part in the US-Spanish war, but did not fire a single shot, because he doesn’t arrived in time, where he was sent. Used only once in the fight - in Reef War II, when he shot the positions of Moroccan rebels near the city of Melilla.
