„Solferino“ – the French armored lineship

The French "Magenta"-class lineship "Solferino" was launched in 1861, June 24. "Solferino" and "Magenta" were the only battery battleships in the world, to have a double deck (double deck) gun arrangement, which allowed to increase the number of guns without increasing the length of the ships, and to increase the firing range of the target. The battleships of this series had a forged ram in the front, which could effectively penetrate the underwater part of enemy ships. The ships' hulls were built from wood and covered with wrought iron armor. During 1870-1871 both ships were in reserve during the Franco-Prussian War. in 1875 October 31 "Magenta", which was parked in the port of Toulon, burned down. "Solferino" was scrapped in 1882.
