“Pyotr Velikiy” (“Петр Великий”) is a heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser of the Russian Navy. The fourth in a row and the only ship of Project 1144.2 "Orlan" in combat formation. The ship's designer is the Northern Design Bureau. The cruisers keel was laid down on March 11, 1986 on the slipway of the Baltic Shipyard (at the laying it was called "Kuibyshev", then - "Yuri Andropov"). April 29, 1989 launched. Renamed “Pyotr Velikiy” (“Петр Великий”) by decree of the President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin on April 22 (October 1), 1992. On April 18, 1998 the flag was raised and joined the Russian Navy. Under the name of the nuclear cruiser "Yuri Andropov" bore side number 183, but April 22, 1992 was named “Pyotr Velikiy” side number - 099 received in 1998 after sea trials and including in service. From September 3 to October 1, 2013 he made an Arctic voyage at the head of a detachment of ships and vessels of the Northern Fleet, he covered 4,000 miles. By 2014 the ship had traveled a total of 140,000 miles. October 15, 2016 as part of a shipborne aircraft carrier group (headed by the TAVKR “Admiral Kuznetsov of the Fleet of the Soviet Union” and also including large anti-submarine ships “Severomorsk” and “Vice Admiral Kulakov” with ships security) went on a campaign in the regions of the northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Returned to Severomorsk on February 9, 2017. During this long sea voyage, the cruiser traveled 18,000 nautical miles. According to the results of 2016, the crew of the heavy nuclear missile cruiser became the best among the missile cruisers of the Russian Navy in the competition for the prize of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy. In the summer of 2017 “Pyotr Velikiy”, together with the Project 941 nuclear submarine of the “Akula” type - TK-208 “Dmitry Donskoy”, made the transition to the Baltic Sea to participate in the celebration of the Day of the Russian Navy. According to the plans of the Ministry of Defense, the cruiser repairs and took a deep modernization in 2019-2022, after completion of work on the “Admiral Nakhimov” ship of the same type.
