At the beginning of the 20th century, Tsarist Russia, followed the example of Germany and Great Britain, in the field of modernization of arms. In 1906 it was decided to build a series of battleships? Witch will be armed in the three-barreled towers of 12 x 305 mm guns and in the casemates of 12 x 120 mm guns. The speed had to reach at least 22 knots. In 1908, a tender was announced for the design and construction of 4 ships, in which 6 Russian and 21 foreign companies participated. The German company “Blohm und Voss” won, but it was contrary to the rules, followed by Russia at the time: all warships had to be built in Russia. Thus, shipbuilding was entrusted to the “Baltijskij” shipyard in St. Petersburg. Thus, in 1911, the construction of the battleship “Gangut” began, which was renamed the “Oktiabrskaya Revoliucija” in 1925. Rebuilt and modernized several times, this ship even participated in World War II. After the war until 1955, he served as a training ship.
